Human Rights Watch warns that Malaysia’s policy of forcibly sending Myanmar refugees back to the border region endangers their safety and violates international protection norms. The organization cites increased reports of violence, lack of shelter, and restricted access to basic services that could lead to loss of life.

Malaysian authorities argue the practice is a measure against illegal migration, yet the Human Rights Watch analysis highlights that the refugees are fleeing persecution and armed conflict in Myanmar. The return policy fails to consider the refugees’ right to asylum and the duty of safe haven under the 1951 Refugee Convention.

Calls for accountability grow as civil society groups demand Malaysia to halt the expulsions, uphold international law, and provide transparent oversight. The international community must ensure that human rights are not sacrificed for political expediency.
